The WAY of the CROSS

Mark 8: 34-38

Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said:

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.”

What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?

Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?

If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

What attitude you take to Jesus is of vital importance. There is no one else like him. He is unique. He is the eternal God. He has the keys to death and hell.

He paid the price for sinful people to be redeemed, to buy their souls from the forfeit. Those who trust in him are certainly saved, and eternity is theirs.

But the text remains.

Jesus says. “if you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me…”

What will you put in the place of Jesus in your life?

What thing or person is equal to him?

What is worth the forfeit of your soul?

That’s why God says, people who turn from his offer of mercy are foolish…. Its madness and a blindness and a self-hatred thing.

Trust Jesus. You will not be sorry.

Whatever cross he requires of you, he will make it possible to bear, and with ultimate joy. Imagine the joy of being an overcomer…!

And best of all, he himself will draw near to you… I cannot tell you what that is like… You have to come yourself for that…

Keep us from evil…

What counts as evil and not just bad?

How do we recognise evil?

Human beings tend to grade sins according to what we think is very bad, or just mildly bad. Murder is very bad and therefore evil, but a small lie, is not serious to us, and therefore just a “white lie.” All the judgments we make are subjective and are only our particular point of view. There seems to be no absolute standard to judge by.

There is a list of wrongs set out for us in the Old Testament, which never change, as they are God’s standards for our thoughts, words and behaviour. But even these are judged by us, according to our personal belief, our family upbringing and society we live in.

Surely lying is not that bad… No one get hurt it seems, and it can often help other people from hurt. Nothing could be further from the truth. Lying is a complete lack of respect for the other person and a face-saving method of covering over wrongs. Is it evil?

A definition: evil is a state of mind and heart that accepts wrong and excuses wrong for selfish ends.

Evil is hurting others and excusing the thought, word or deed for our own benefit.

All wrong is evil, not just what we consider to be the extreme varieties of wrong- doing. The human heart gravitates towards it and often doesn’t even recognise it at all.

We are in a predicament. Evil invades my thoughts, determines my words and plays out in my behaviours. I cannot escape it.

There is only one remedy for this moral disease- the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. Only he is able to forgive it all and take away the desire for it and drive evil from us.

Let us run from evil and pursue goodness.

Evil is not neutral. It grows and becomes a powerful force in our lives.

Only he can give us a taste for rightness, and the longing to be better, to be right in God’s eyes.

Deaf and speechless

Can you remember a great teacher?

I had a biology teacher who was really good to us and taught us real science. We did experiments and had discussions, and I still remember what she taught me. 40 years ago..!!

Jesus is going to teach us about Himself and miracles, today, and how He is willing and powerful to heal anyone with any difficulty.

Jesus walks 50 miles to where he knew there was a man waiting to see Him.

The man was profoundly deaf and his speech was very unclear. The man had some kind of accident and had lost his hearing, and because of that, his speech was also affected.

Jesus is going to make this miracle different. He is going to slow the miracle down so that we can see what he does for the man. He will show us the anatomy of a miracle, so that we can see Jesus- his power and glory and everlasting love..

The deafness:
The man doesn’t hear. He doesn’t hear God and is undisturbed by what is going on around him. Thinks everything will be Ok, and people will look after him, and it will all work out fine.
He has never heard the good news about Jesus. He doesn’t know who Jesus is. He is insensible to the blessing she could have.
This is a bad state to be in, because he doesn’t understand his need, and he doesn’t understand what he could have.

The unclear speech:
If he doesn’t understand about Jesus and the state he is in really, he will not be able to speak up and have a testimony.
Testimonies are so powerful and they draw us to think about Jesus, and what he can do. Jesus is real and he really does change people. He has changed people here.
This man could not speak about God’s blessing to him, because he didn’t know what they were.
Jesus touches the man to help him to believe in who he is. How does Jesus touch us?
He gives us helps to our faith…

The Bible       Prayer      The circumstances of our lives

The miracle:
Four parts to this miracle.
1. Jesus puts his fingers in the man’s ears. This is the root of the problem and Jesus deals with it first. Our root problem is not deafness, but spiritual deafness, which stops us hearing Gods word, and understanding it. All kinds of distractions come along and we shift our attention to them. Perhaps I am at home in the evening, and the work is over for the day. I think of reading my Bible, but just then something comes on the TV and I just watch that instead.

2. Jesus spat on his fingers and touched the mans tongue. If someone did that to us, we would not allow them to put their saliva on us… We view it as unclean, and unhygienic. Jesus is here, looking for submission from the man, and is watching to see if the man understands who Jesus is and to bow his knees before him. The man did understand, and complied with what Jesus did. When Jesus seeks to work in our lives, do we comply? Do we wriggle and squirm and make excuses for ourselves, that we are OK as we are? Or do we submit to Him as our Lord and master…

3. Jesus now looks up to heaven. Jesus has all authority and power. Jesus was not praying for help. Jesus is showing us, here, that all good things come for above. JESUS sighs. He is not tired, but is identifying himself with the predicament of this man. The heart of the Lord Jesus Christ… so loving, kind and able to identify with our weaknesses.

4. Jesus speaks a word “Ephphatha” be opened. The man is healed. His healing comes from God.

The miracle for us:
We do not hear God. We do not want to. We need a miracle.
We need to really understand what Jesus has done for us, and he can take away the wrong that keeps us from God. Our thought processes and desires need changing, so that we want what God wants, and not the foolishness of this world.
This man was overjoyed at what Jesus did for him, and how his life was made whole again- made fully operational.
Jesus is the humble and loving Lord, who rescues all who call on him.
He did it freely.
Jesus is the perfect Saviour.
He will never let you down

The question is are you going to come and kneel at his feet?
Are you going to submit to what he says and does in your life?
He is the same tonight as he ever was or is.
Maybe its time for you to give up your ways- submit- and follow his ways.

The Carpenter

Posted: August 24, 2015 in The Carpenter
JESUS was just a carpenter. He worked with his hands, as he had been taught by his father. He earned his living by making things and fixing things for other people. I am sure they would criticise and complain about what he had done… Curious…
The carpenter ended his life on a wooden cross. A cross made by the hate of human hands, and designed for maximum suffering. He went there for you. He stayed there for you. He died there for you.
This was no ordinary carpenter…

Evacuation day

JESUS said One day, he will return and it will be the end for this world’s schemes.
JESUS will return and take His people to heaven, where they will reign forever.
The scripture urges us to BE READY, because we do not know the day or the hour…

Only JESUS…

I don’t know who you depend on….

Everyone around us is as frail as we are. They all hurt, get sick and eventually leave the planet, never to return. It can be a depressing thought, and can add to our insecurity and lack of confidence.

images-2

Those who trust the unchanging and all-powerful God, who can never just leave us, have total security and can live in the knowledge that He is always with us, in life and also eternity.

images-3

There are people we can trust in our lives, and it is good when we have family or friends who are dependable and trustworthy.

God is ultimately so, and when we look to Him in faith, and give our lives to Him, He becomes our Father. The wrong things we have done, are gone, and we turn away from the sins that so easily invade our lives, and we have His joy and peace in our inner life.

His power is now in my life, and as I trust Him every day, and depend on Him, my life changes and I can have victory over wrong-doing, and I obey Him and I am changed to be like Him.
