Ephesians: Overview

Ephesians: Why Ephesians?

Written by Paul the Apostle.

It’s a letter written to the Christians at Ephesus.

Ephesus is a godless city and people who live there worship the goddess Diana. She is all about money, and they are all about money! The merchants and business people, pray to her to give them good success and get lots of money for themselves. The city dwellers are all about getting stuff and enjoying life to the full.

There is a small group of Christian believers in Ephesus, and they belong to God and don’t live under theses rules of living. It is very difficult to live with people who are going in the opposite direction to you. The Christians get worried and sometimes doubt comes in and they get afraid. Paul is writing to them to encourage them and show them what they have in Jesus and who they are to God.

We will look at some of what Paul says in this letter, which is also God’s Word to us today. We will find lots of good things that will help us to cope with the difficulties of life, and show us who we really are if we are loving Jesus with all our hearts.

Chapter one is all about the blessings Christians have in Jesus Christ.Paul points out to the believers that they are God’s children. He tells them many blessings, which we will look at next week. They are blessing that only Christians will appreciate and want.

Paul wants them to be strong in the Lord, and to have insight and wisdom as they look at life. They need to see the reality that God sees, not the foolish ways of the people in Ephesus.

Christians are alive in Christ. Their souls were once dead to God, but they now can know God and have a relationship with Him. This is the greatest thing, but we only appreciate it when we come to God and seek forgiveness for our sins.

Christians are one in Christ. When we confess our sins and repent and are forgiven, we become at one with Jesus. We are His brothers and sisters, in the heavenly kingdom.

We also become one with each other, and can relate to each other and forgiven each other in his name.

Christians understand mysteries that other people don’t. They can bear sufferings for the sake of Jesus their Lord. They can know Gods love in a really deep way and can have that love towards other people.

Christians are children of light. We must live in the light and not practice the sinful works of darkness. Our lives should be pure and good. Where ever we go we bring the goodness of Jesus and the light of the truth of his word. We seek to be like God and read and pray so that we can know Him and what He is like.

Christians have good relationships. We should be seeking peace with people and not arguing and causing deliberate upset. We respect each other and behave in a way that pleases God. We are to love each other and treat each other as we would like to be treated.  We must do what our parents ask us to and respect them. If we are parents we are not to be harsh and annoy our children.

Christians work hard. We do our work as it is to Christ. We do our work thoroughly and honestly and not taking anything or trying to get away with less. We do not speak rudely to those in charge of us.

Christians have armour. God gives spiritual armour to those who follow Him. He does not leave us on our own, but gives us the ability to use the armour and fight against the enemy.

Paul signs his letter in peace to the people at Ephesus.

He sends love and faith from God and Jesus Christ.

He sends grace to everyone who loves The Lord Jesus with an undying love.

THE BEATITUDES: Matthew 5
JESUS said:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Beatitude 9

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Matthew 5:11-12

Beatitude eight was a blessing on people who suffer because of their righteous lives. This is a very difficult trouble to cope with. This next and last beatitude is similar, and we are shown wonderful blessings in it.

Personal injury

It says that we are blessed is we are caused personal insult and injury because we belong to Jesus.

There are many situations in life that will be difficult for you when people find out you are a Christian. Some people will not like it because your life will make them feel bad about what they are doing. They will insult you and say evil against you behind your back and sometimes to your face.

Some people may make up stories about you and tell untruths about things you have done. They will try to get other people to hate you and have a bad opinion of you. Sometimes we might have done that to someone too….

Who is the enemy?

The enemy of God and Christians and all humans, wants to keep things bad and he doesn’t want anyone to know God and find out how good God is and how wonderful it is to belong to Him. So he will make up stories and lies and he will use other people to spread them around. He is very hateful and does not want any human to know God or be blessed. He hates humans, just because God loves them, and wants them to come to Him.

Spite

Satan is full of spite and will do anything to keep you away for Jesus. He tells only lies, and he uses people to do his dirty work.

God loves human beings, and He even sent His Son, Jesus to die for them. He did not die for the devil and the devil is full of fury because of that… eveything he does is hateful and unkind. If we are hateful and unkind, we are doing his work for him.

Consolation

So, if you are a Christian and you are experiencing this hatefulness, Jesus said,

“Rejoice and be glad”

Not be sorry and cry about it, but be really happy. Because if you stand up to the hate, there is great reward in heaven…

Heaven seems a long way away.

It hard to think about it, it seems unreal.

An unseen world

God says we must not just look at the outward things, but at the things we have that are unseen. Christians have the Holy Spirit living in them, and to know His power and love is the greatest thing…! It is really heaven living inside of us. It is the love we have from God to show us that we are His children. If you have this, you are so blessed, and you will know it.

This helps us to overcome the painful words and experiences in this life. We will know inside our souls, that heaven will be great and we won’t want to let our Lord Jesus down, but giving in to the evil words about us.

The inner life

That inner life we have with God, is the real life of heaven. Don’t be discouraged if people turn against you for walking in God’s ways.

The people in the Bible followed God and especially the prophets. If you read the Bible you will read about their troubles and heartaches.

Jeremiah was thrown into a pit to die. He told people they needed to repent and change their ways… they didn’t like that…

Elijah was dedicated to God. The wicked king Ahab hated him because God listened to Elijah’s prayers. Ahab tried to kill him, so he had to run away into the wilderness. God kept Elijah safe and fed him food brought with the ravens.

Danielworked for a godless king Darius. He refused to stop praying to God. The jealous colleagues set him up and Daniel ended up in the den of lions. He stayed there all night, and God protected him and the lions left him alone.

Annawho lived in the temple of God and prayed day and night, waited until she was 84 years, before she saw the promised Messiah. She never stopped believing, even though nothing seemd to be happening…

All these Prophets of God suffered because they believed and spoke God’s word, but they now rejoice in the presence of their Lord and God. If we also hold fast, we will also rejoice.

What a blessing to be counted with them, those amazing heroes of the faith..!

So, let us not be weak and scared about our faith. Let us speak up and live our lives for Jesus.

Pray for enemies

In fact, Jesus told us to do something really powerful. He tells us to actually pray for your enemies and for people who use you and treat you like a slave. This is the inner power of the Holy Spirit, to love people and not hate them.

This is the oposite to Satan’s way. This is the way that will overcome in the end.

This is the way that will make you blessed. When God blesses, he blesses you and makes you like Him..!

So we end the Beatitudes in the realms of heaven. We can walk this earth with God in the power of the Holy Spirit. This is the most amazing blessing, so we must seek it with all our hearts.

Job 5
“Blessed is the one whom God corrects;
so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. For he wounds, but he also binds up;
he injures, but his hands also heal. From six calamities he will rescue you; in seven no harm will touch you. In famine he will deliver you from death, and in battle from the stroke of the sword. You will be protected from the lash of the tongue, and need not fear when destruction comes. You will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the wild animals. For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you. You will know that your tent is secure; you will take stock of your property and find nothing missing. You will know that your children will be many, and your descendants like the grass of the earth.
You will come to the grave in full vigor, like sheaves gathered in season. “We have examined this, and it is true.
So hear it and apply it to yourself.”

Hosea 14:9 NIV
“Who is wise? Let them realize these things. Who is discerning? Let them understand. The ways of the Lord are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them.”

find ways to share together… encourage, teach and build each other up in the Lord Jesus…

we killed Him, but love rose up from the grave to save us and make us glad…

Beatitude eight

“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.”

Let’s start by talking about the Kingdom of heaven. Many people use these words, but what exactly do they mean?

Is it a place?

Is it a state of mind?

Is it in this world?

The scripture tells us about that Kingdom.

It is a wonderful place, where only certain people can go. It is a state of being. You can be in a war zone, and yet the Kingdom of God is within you. It will one day be in an actual place, called heaven.

You can only get in if you have been changed, and you trust in Jesus like a child.

It is nothing to do with this world, riches or being recognized. Jesus said a number of times, that it is hard for the rich to be part of this kingdom. Riches blind us to our need and we go after the things that money can buy.

It is so wonderful, that if you see what it is, you will give up everything to get it.

The kingdom stared small, like a mustard seed, but now it is everywhere, all over the world, in the hearts and lives of those people who believe.

The kingdom of heaven is like a wedding feast. Those who belong to it, are ready for the time when the bridegroom will come for the bride. One day soon, Jesus will come again for His people. Will we be ready for that great day? On this day, the kingdom will come and all evil and all evildoers will be put away where they belong.

The kingdom has workers who do Gods work. They sow the seed of the Good news about Jesus so that other people can believe.

Jesus said that to enter this kingdom, you had to become like a little child. You had to have a simple child-like faith that trusts God for everything.

It is imperative that we get into this kingdom. To be outside of it, is very serious, and we are in danger of the punishment of God. The gospel is Good news, for those who see the kingdom and see that it is worth having.

The kingdom is spiritual. It is not of this world and is the opposite of what this world offers to us. The promises of this world are false. They lie to us.

Duped?

Even at school we are told if we do certain things we will be successful. If we get our exams we will get a great job, whatever kind of job we like. We will have a house and car and all the great things on offer on the TV..!!

Many young people grow up to find it isn’t like that at all. People have to work very hard to get enough money to just get by. To get the rich-looking stuff, usually means you have to do things that are not good. Your life-style is not like Gods.

If you read the Bible and really think about it, if you come and hear talks about God and what he has done for us, you will understand more and more about who God is and what He has done. If we really see what Jesus did on the cross and how much we need His love and forgiveness, we will start to see this everlasting kingdom.

We will start to want to be in it. We will start to seek God.
  • What would God like me to do?
  • How would He like me to live?

We will start to love God when we see His ways. We will see our own sinfulness and it will get ugly -looking to me. I want rid of it.!!

I ask God to forgive me and take my sinful desirers away. I fight them every day. My behaviour starts to change. I start doing what it says in the Bible.

Then other people start to notice.

They don’t like how you have changed, because you are doing the right thing, and they are not. So friends and even family can turn against us.

People leave us out.
  • They whisper behind our backs.
  • They tell other people not to be friendly with us.
  • Then someone calls you a name to your face
  • When you don’t retaliate they do it more because they think you are foolish.
  • Sometimes everyone can just ignore you and it can be very hurtful…
Jesus says, If you are badly treated for doing the right thing, then the kingdom of Heaven belongs to you.!!!

That’s amazing.!!

People who trust in Jesus and love Him and obey Him, have the Everlasting Kingdom of Heaven…it resides within your soul.

If people hate you for it… don’t worry.. think about what God has stored up for you on that last great day and forever.

It is hurtful when you are rejected… It is painful to be called names and laughed at…. BUT Jesus suffered that too!

He is able to comfort us in our souls in amazing ways, so that we do not forget what he has done for us and what is our inheritance in heaven.

If you do not know Jesus, and your soul is not alive to God, you will not appreciate the Kingdom of heaven anyway. You will be happy with the here and now, and may even find yourself persecuting the people of God…

If you know Jesus and are a forgiven one, then you will know that kingdom already, in your inner being.

The Holy Spirit lives in you and you enjoy the Living water that Jesus gives.

Luke 18:29-30 NIV

“Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God  will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.”

Don’t worry about what other people say. If you belong to Jesus then His kingdom is yours.

Lift your eyes from this world, and think of what God has laid for you in that wonderful place, when the Kingdom of God will come. Those who love Jesus will have this kingdom in them. They will one day live in this glorious kingdom.

Beatitude seven

“Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.”

This Beatitude is a bit diferent than others, as the reward seems different from the blessing.

  • Blessed are those who mourn – comfort
  • Blessed are the hungry – filled.

This beatitude is about peace… It is interesting that Jesus singles this situation out. If our world is at peace in itself, why do we need peacemakers?

Jesus is pointing out to us that our world is not at peace. Not at peace with God, or with each other.

We can see this, as they are so many wars going on all over our world.

Soldiers get killed in wars and so do ordinary people. Mums and dads, grandparents, Aunties, Uncles, brothers and sisters. Wars are a great evil.

In our relationships there is war. We argue and fight with people we know, and even our friends. In our families we disagree and people get angry and upset with each other.

Everyone experiences this lack of peace. The only reason we have peace is becuase of the mercy of God. Otherwise, aggresion is our natural domain.

People we love, we can still find ourselves disagreeing and causing contention between each other. We all do this. We can be very disappointed with each other.

We desperately need a peacemaker.

Peacemakers are those who are able to make peace in some way or other. They are blessed.God says tha theywill be His children. He will ake tem and call them His children.

CHILDREN OF GOD

Jesus did not say, politicians, economists, trechers in schools, family memebers, ministers in churches. He says anyone who makes peace is a child of God.

Why are we in such a state as this.?  Our hearts are corrupt and wicked. We see this from the other Beatitudes. God tells us what we are like in His Word. We are so corrupted that we don’t even realise we are so sinful.

We do not want peace, we want to do whatever we choose. We pursue our goals, not caring about the other people around us.

I will do whatever I want. This can generate huge amounts of ill-will.

But there is a more pressing and urgent peace we need.

We need Peace with God.

With out faith in Him, repentance from all sin and turning from it, there is no peace between us and God. With out this peace, we are and remain His enemies. We reject His love, His goodness and His peace also.

The human condition is in a critical state. We are not at peace with God, and we cannot make peace with God. Without faith and repentance we have no spiritual life. We are dead toward God. I cannot make peace with God by myself. It doesn’t matter how many years I read the Bible, How many times I go to church, it will never get me spiritual life.

Spiritual life comes from God. His Holy Spirit speaks into our lives, convicts us of sin, and allows us to see and feel our need. I must listen to Him, and respond in faith.

How do I get life and peace?

We cannot save our selves, and God knows that, so He sent Jesus into the world to pay our debt of sins, and make it possible for us to come to God. Jesus is the light of the world, the bread of life, the living water, and He came to show God to us and to show they way to God and peace…!!

The sacrifice of Jesus made it possible for sinful rebels, enemies of God’s ways and His person, to be brought into a living relationship of Peace. Jesus is the Prince of Peace, because of who He is and what He has done. He is the only one who can bring peace between us and God.

When there is a war in the world, sometimes the two sides want to stop fighting and make peace, there must be a go-between…. someone who can satisfy each side so that they can stop fighting.

JESUS is our go-between to bring us to peace with God. The Bible calls Him a Mediator… someone who can bring peace to both sides.

NOW…

If I now believe in God and have found peace with Him, I can now tell others about this wonderful peace that anyone can have. If I spend my time telling this good news, and bringing other people to peace with God, I am now a PEACEMAKER!!

Peacemakers stop wars. This is good. Our world needs people like that, But what we are talking about is much more. This is something Supernatural.

This is something outside of us as humans, it is an everlasting event, which changes people and turns them for being against God, to trusting in Him and having supernatural life.

If you are a Christian you can be one of God’s PEACEMAKERS.
You are also one of His SONS AND DAUGHTERS.

You may work of God weeping tears, becuase it is a difficult life, but you will in the end reap JOY….

Beatitude six

“Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.”

That’s an amazing thing… to see God.!

In Old testament times people were afraid to see God, because if you saw God, you would instantly die. His holiness and His purity are so extreme. His is completely pure. Pure.. that’s what pure means. It means pure!! No faults no sins, completely perfect. Jesus said people who are pure in heart will see God.

How do we possibly unpick that. We cannot see God because we are flesh and blood human. How do we see the holy God who is Spirit and who is all holiness and all goodness.?

People who are pure in heart.. Who are they? Most people would hesitate to say they are pure in heart. There are some who feel that their minds are pure, and that they have been trained through education to have good thoughts and honourable ideas, but to be pure in heart means all your emotion, your will, your attitudes, your predispositions are all good, always. You have no bad attitudes or any prejudices against anyone. You are an absolutely pure person…

Most people will say they do some good things, but admit they are also wrong about other things and have at times done wrong. Many people see their moral state as a kind of competition between the good side and the bad side. But it is easy to see, that is not what pure is.! Pure is pure. Pure is 100% holy… So how can a human heart be 100% holy? Something is going to have to happen to it, to make it different. God says our hearts are desperately wicked and we don’t really understand just how wicked our hearts are.!! We are that bad. Even the good things we think we do, are completely tainted by the badness within us.

Our hearts are not pure, they are evil.

This is terrible shock to us, and we don’t want to hear it.

So how can I get this pure heart, if my heart is already contaminated?

The scripture is plain. Our hearts need to be changed. I need a spiritual heart transplant, so that my wicked heart is taken away and replaced by a holy one. When I seek this from God, he can do this for me and give me a heart that wants righteousness and good.

The only place I can get this is from a pure God.. a Holy God.

God sent Jesus to show us pure. He lived amongst human beings and said pure words and did pure deeds. He showed us the way we are required to live before a holy God. It so all recoded for us in the Bible. Do we accept what he said? Well, maybe it seems a good idea from time to time, but we don’t want this. We rejected Him and killed Him. We don’t want pure.

But God’s purity was working even through that terrible deed. Because through the death of Jesus on the cross, He bought the right for anyone who comes to Him to be pure. This was God’s way that He required to pay for the rottenness of our sins. God can take away our stony heart of hate and give of soft and loving hearts of love.

We can have a pure heart.

We cannot earn it. We are not good enough. So we come to the Lord Jesus and ask for forgiveness from our many sins and to take away the hard heart and give a believing heart of faith. He will change your heart. This heart will want different things… to walk in the pure ways of God, to love God, to obey God’s Word. As a Christian He is making you holy and conforming your desires to be like His good desires. He is changing you to strengthen you and help you to fight sin and reject it in your life.

Then on that great day, when we pass from this world into the next, we will finally be made holy and the pure heart will reign in our new lives with God forever.

So we become like Him. I am blessed because I have a pure heart and I will see God, for I will see Jesus. It is personal. It doesn’t happen in groups, but as we seek God and desire to be free from sin and death, and repent of my sins, I am made a new person.

Therefore, it is possible for a sinful human to see God, because of what Jesus has done for us. I can be changed and changed forever.

The pure in heart are blessed and will see GOD.

Beatitude five

“Blessed are the merciful for they will obtain mercy…” Matthew 5

This blessing is for everyone who is merciful.

It is for people who are kind and treat other people well. Showing mercy to people involves not showing up their failings and trying to help them overcome their difficulties. It involves giving up time and things that I want for the sake of someone else. It means making sacrifices so that another person can have good things.

As human beings we tend not to think this way. We think all we are and have is our own and everybody has to provide for themselves. Being merciful is a revolutionary mind set, and is taught to us by someone outside ourselves.

If you are a Christian, you have received huge mercy from God. So now you can show that mercy to others. The promise says that if I do not show mercy, then God will not show mercy to me. That is a very big deal.

What does mercy look like?

We can be with a group of people and sometimes one person is singled out to be picked on. This person is made to feel left out and maybe the others don’t show kindness to them. It can be like bullying. Why do we do this kind of thing.? Usually we put other people down to make ourselves feel better. We know the others in the group will follow us so we leave the single person out of our friendship.

We can see people around us in need and not feel any love towards them to help them in their difficulties. We think someone else will do it. We regard the person as not worth helping. I think I have enough to do without helping foolish people.

We see a person struggling in the street. Do I help them or let them manage by themselves?

I might look foolish if I help the person. Maybe people will think I am too softhearted.

I have a friend who has difficulty with doing something. Do I help them, or leave them to figure it out? It might take me a lot of time to help them. I don’t want to spend my time that way.

I have family and friends who do not know Jesus.. do I tell them and show them what He is like.? Or do I just tell them to go to church.? Maybe they will figure it out by themselves…

God says there is no mercy for me, if I don’t show mercy to others.

God has shown us amazing mercy, by sending Jesus to sacrifice His life so that we could be saved. There is no mercy greater than that. He loved us so much that He gave His life to pay for our sins. He didn’t have to do it, but He did. If Jesus did that for you, His can you refuse mercy to other people?

Mercy is greater than anger. Mercy over comes all negative thoughts and feelings. Mercy is given to us, so that we can give it to others.

If you think you don’t need God’s mercy- think again.

We all need mercy – God’s mercy and mercy from each other.

Let mercy win the day.

“Judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.” James 2:13 NIV
