What are you worth?

It is easy to think you deserve something. It can seem that you should have everything you need or want, but unfortunately these very things come between us and the Loving JESUS.

The Apostle Paul says, “everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.” Philippians 3:8+9

We give up so little and are so easily distracted from following and serving him.

Paul said, ‘I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead.He loved JESUS and wanted to know Him so closely, that he would give up everything for him.”

We give up such blessings and power for he trivial things of this world. We give up knowing the eternal GOD as our Father, just to feel happy and comfortable.

JESUS gave up everything, so that we could have everything truly valuable, with him forever .

JESUS says, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?l Is anything worth more than your soul?” Matthew 16:25

It is a stark choice – choose wisely….

Strength in my soul

It is good to feel strong, and be able to do things that we like to do. It is important to look after our bodies and our minds, so that we keep strong and get stronger as time goes on. To have energy is great, and to be able to exercise and play games and work, is part of being really healthy.

Our inner lives need to be strong as well, and we need to have courage and boldness to make the right decisions and do what is right, even when others do not. We have to feed our souls, as we feed our bodies, and reading Gods word the Bible, will make us strong as we learn what is right, and as we think about how it applies to our lives.

When we get tired and energy flags, people turn to sugar drinks, caffeine drinks and other substances, to help us feel better, and more able to do what we want- like a short cut to strength, so that we can enjoy what we do. This is not a good idea. It might seem to work in the short term, but ultimately it damages our health in fundamental ways.

It is similar with our souls. We turn to other things to make us able to cope and to give us some sort of satisfaction. We buy stuff; watch exciting things on the screen, which make us feel better; listen to music; eat lots of tasty food; indulge in risky behaviour… it goes on. None of these will feed our souls, but leave us empty and needing more the next time.

The only one who can feed us truly and fully, is JESUS. He is the “bread of life” To know Him is the greatest meal we can ever have, because he fills our lives with his Holy Spirit, and will never forsake us.

If we are trusting JESUS, He will make us courageous and give us strength in our inner-most souls. A fantastic promise for those who believe it and believe Him.

Another year ends within the sight
Of another with dreams of luminous light
All gloom has dispersed in the glorious beams
Of heavens promises kept and wisdom seen.
The road of suffering, perseverance make
As character built and doubt forsake.

The Trinity

The day is today. Tonight is the night. The promise is fulfilled and God has come to us…

Jesus has trusted himself to the Father, that the Father will keep him and bring him to the point of why he came here. The Holy Spirit will dwell in JESUS and give the power to do marvellous deeds and speak words true and able to save. This is the Trinity- the Father, the son – the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. All equal in glory and in power.

That God should care for us so completely, is something we cannot take in, but God speaks truly, so we can believe.

The worst

As we get really excited (or not!) about the near approach of Christmas, the good feelings of kindness and good-humour are around. The shops sing out the usual Christmas songs, the television has all the usual Christmas films, and the streets are as dirty as ever… we can feel tired of it all, and find it difficult to see beyond Christmas day.

The baby in the manger isn’t even noticed, the message is drowned out by santa songs and our need of fulfilment is trivialised. We have to push aside the glitter and the hype and look again at the small body in the manger- who is this? why did he come to such a place as this? Has this meaning for me?

“This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.” 1 Timothy 1:15

This was written by the most amazingly godly man who ever lived, the Apostle Paul. He says the message is for everyone, and should have our full attention, because it is true.

JESUS, the baby in the dirty shed, is the HOLY GOD and he came into our ruined world to save people. What people?

Everyone who believes and puts all their faith in him. We cannot earn it, or do anything to get it, but to seek Him earnestly and rest on his reliable love.

Paul was the worst… “I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man…”

Yet God forgave him everything and lifted him up to serve Him in wonderful ways. Only God can do this…

“The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.”

As God poured out grace on Paul, so he will pour it out on you. JUST BELIEVE…

Gifts for God…

At Christmas we like to think and hope that we might get some presents from people who care about us. We hope we will like them and be able to enjoy what is in the gift in the days after. Maybe we are giving gifts, and we also hope those we love will like what we have chosen for them.

When Jesus was born, some very influential men, clever and full of faith in God, brought gifts to Jesus- Gold, frankincense and myrrh. These were precious gifts, as they signified who Jesus is, and what he was going to do to save all people who put their trust in Him. They carried the gifts a long way- from the East, and gladly gave them to the one who was their Saviour.

Romans 11 verse 34+35 says,

“For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his councillor? or who has given a gift to Him that he might be repaid?”

The Lord knows the end of a life from the beginning. He knows the end of events from where they began, and all things belong to Him. He decides what happens to us, and he needs no advice from any councellor. What can we give such a God? What gift would be suitable? Whatever we give, he does not need and he doesn’t need to repay us for whatever great deeds we might do for His sake.

We cannot give to Him, but he has given to us… given the greatest gift we could ever have- forgiveness of sins and a new life, bought with the blood of His son, Jesus, on the cross.

Take the gift.

Then give Him your greatest gift- your whole life… and gain forgiveness and peace forever…
